Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (or plant-based butter for vegan)
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs (or flaxseed meal/applesauce for vegan)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk (or plant-based milk for vegan)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a bundt pan thoroughly with butter and dust lightly with flour. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then mix in vanilla extract. Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the wet ingredients, starting and ending with dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  2. Divide and Flavor: Split the batter evenly into two bowls. Mix cocoa powder thoroughly into one bowl to create the chocolate batter; leave the other batter plain vanilla.
  3. Create the Zebra Stripes: Spoon 2–3 tablespoons of vanilla batter into the center of the bundt pan. Then spoon 2–3 tablespoons of chocolate batter directly on top. Repeat alternating between vanilla and chocolate batters, forming concentric striped circles until all batter is used.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Place the bundt pan in the center of the preheated oven. Bake 45–55 minutes. Test doneness by inserting a toothpick near the center; if it comes out clean or with a few crumbs, the cake is ready. Let cool in the pan 15 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use room temperature butter, eggs, and milk for a better emulsified batter.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the cake light and tender.
  • Pour batters slowly into the center of the pan to maintain clear zebra stripes.
  • Grease and flour the bundt pan well to prevent sticking, especially in detailed parts of the pan.
  • Start checking for doneness a few minutes before the timer to avoid overbaking.
