Ingredients

Scale

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (113g) Butter
  • 1 cup (200g) Sugar
  • 2 large Eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (95g) All-Purpose Flour (or gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free option)
  • 1/3 cup (40g) Cocoa Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt

Optional Add-ins

  • 1/2 cup Chocolate Chips or Chunks

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Baking Pan and Heart Cutter: Grease a square baking pan to prevent sticking, then preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). If you don’t have a heart-shaped cookie cutter, you can improvise with a knife later, but a cutter makes shaping neater and easier.
  2. Melt Butter and Mix with Sugar: Gently melt the butter in a saucepan or microwave. Combine it with the sugar in a mixing bowl, stirring until smooth and shiny to help create the fudgy, glossy brownie crust.
  3. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract to enhance the flavor.
  4. Sift Dry Ingredients and Combine: Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually fold this dry mix into the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined to avoid cakey brownies.
  5. Fold in Chocolate Chips (Optional): Gently fold in chocolate chips or chunks to add extra melty chocolate pockets throughout the brownies.
  6. Bake and Cool: Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spread evenly, and bake for 20-25 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out with a few moist crumbs. Let the brownies cool completely before cutting.
  7. Cut into Heart Shapes: Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to press out hearts from the cooled brownies. Edges and crumbs can be enjoyed as taste-testers.

Notes

  • Use room temperature eggs for a smoother batter and tender crumb.
  • Do not overbake; remove when a toothpick shows moist crumbs to keep fudginess.
  • Cool brownies completely before cutting for neat shapes.
  • Lightly grease your cookie cutter to prevent sticking when cutting hearts.
  • Personalize toppings with flaky sea salt, powdered sugar, or drizzled chocolate.
