Southern Banana Cobbler is a classic Southern dessert combining ripe bananas with a sweet, buttery cobbler topping that is both tender and fluffy. This comforting treat perfectly balances fruity freshness and warm homemade sweetness, making it an irresistible dessert for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit Base

  • 4 to 5 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced into even rounds

Cobbler Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Bananas: Peel and slice the bananas into even rounds. Arrange them evenly in a buttered baking dish to create the fruit base for your cobbler.
  2. Make the Cobbler Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and optional cinnamon and nutmeg. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract until the batter is smooth but still slightly thick.
  3. Assemble and Bake: Pour the cobbler batter evenly over the bananas in the baking dish. Do not stir. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden and cooked through.
  4. Cool and Serve: Allow the cobbler to cool slightly so the flavors meld together. Serve warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Use firm ripe bananas to avoid a soggy base.
  • Keep butter cold to ensure a flaky topping texture.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the cobbler light and airy.
  • Bake uncovered to get a crisp topping without steaming.
  • Check for doneness starting at 35 minutes to prevent overbaking.
