Perfect for parties, snacks, or casual get-togethers, these squares feature layers of deli meats, provolone cheese, fresh vegetables, and zesty Italian dressing all assembled on crusty bread. They are customizable, simple to prepare, and can be made ahead to save time, making them a versatile and crowd-pleasing appetizer.

Ingredients

Bread Base

  • Italian Bread or Hero Roll – 1 sturdy loaf (about 12 inches long)

Deli Meats

  • Sliced Salami – 4 oz
  • Sliced Pepperoni – 4 oz
  • Sliced Ham – 4 oz

Cheese

  • Provolone Cheese, sliced – 6 oz

Fresh Vegetables

  • Lettuce leaves, crisp – 1 cup
  • Tomatoes, ripe, sliced – 1 medium
  • Red Onions, thinly sliced – 1 small

Dressing and Extras

  • Italian Dressing – 1/4 cup
  • Black Olives (optional) – 1/4 cup sliced
  • Pickles (optional) – 1/4 cup sliced

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread Base: Slice the Italian bread or hero roll horizontally into a sturdy base about half an inch thick. Lightly toast if desired to add crunch and prevent sogginess.
  2. Layer the Meats and Cheese: Evenly distribute the slices of salami, pepperoni, and ham across the bread. Follow with a generous layer of provolone cheese to meld the flavors beautifully.
  3. Add Fresh Vegetables: Layer crisp lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, and thin onion rings on top of the meats and cheese to add texture and bright flavors.
  4. Drizzle Italian Dressing: Pour zesty Italian dressing evenly over the assembled layers to enhance the flavor with tangy, herby notes.
  5. Optional Toppings: Add black olives, pickles, or other preferred extras for added flavor, then gently press to compact the layers.
  6. Cut Into Squares: Using a sharp, serrated knife, cut the sandwich into uniform squares about two inches wide. Serve immediately or store.

Notes

  • Use freshly baked Italian bread for the best texture and taste.
  • Balance ingredients to avoid soggy or messy squares.
  • Refrigerate the squares for about 30 minutes before serving to let flavors meld and ease slicing.
  • A serrated knife ensures clean cuts without squishing the squares.
  • Prep meats and veggies in advance for quick assembly.
