Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of garlic powder

Toppings and Sauces

  • 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced (for caramelizing)
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil (for caramelizing onions)
  • Stout beer mustard sauce (about 4 tbsp)
  • 4 soft brioche buns
  • Butter for toasting buns
  • Fresh lettuce leaves
  • Tomato slices

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: Mix the ground beef gently with salt, pepper, and a pinch of garlic powder, being careful not to overwork the meat. Shape into 4 evenly sized patties, slightly larger than your buns to allow for shrinkage while cooking.
  2. Caramelize the Onions: Slice onions thinly and cook slowly in butter or oil over low heat until golden brown and sweet, about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid burning.
  3. Toast the Buns: Lightly butter the brioche buns and toast them in a skillet or oven until golden and crisp to provide a wonderful contrast to the juicy patties.
  4. Cook the Patties: Grill or pan-fry the patties over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add sharp cheddar slices on top during the last minute to melt beautifully over the meat.
  5. Assemble the Burgers: Spread stout beer mustard sauce on the bottom bun, add lettuce and tomato slices, place the cheesy patty on top, crown with caramelized onions, and cap with the top bun.

Notes

  • Do Not Overmix: Handle the meat gently to keep patties tender and juicy.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Quality cheese and fresh vegetables make all the difference.
  • Rest the Meat: Let patties rest a few minutes after cooking to retain their juices.
  • Experiment with Sauces: Mix mustard with horseradish for an extra zing if desired.
  • Don’t Skip Toasting: Toasted buns prevent sogginess and add a satisfying crunch.
