Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 fresh or day-old plain or garlic bagels
  • 8 oz full-fat cream cheese, softened
  • 34 fresh garlic cloves, minced (or 1 tsp garlic powder)
  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil, for toasting
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Optional Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp fresh chives, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
  • Red pepper flakes or hot sauce, to taste
  • Shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese, to taste
  • Thin slices of smoked salmon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Garlic: Finely mince fresh garlic cloves or combine garlic powder with the softened cream cheese. This step infuses the filling with the signature garlicky aroma essential to the recipe.
  2. Mix the Cream Cheese Filling: In a mixing bowl, blend the softened cream cheese with the minced garlic, salt, pepper, and any optional fresh herbs or spices. Stir thoroughly until smooth and well combined.
  3. Hollow Out the Bagel: Slice each bagel horizontally and carefully scoop out some of the soft inner bread to create a cavity large enough to hold the filling without overflowing.
  4. Stuff the Bagel: Generously fill the hollowed center of each bagel half with the prepared cream cheese mixture, spreading evenly to cover every corner.
  5. Toast to Perfection: Lightly brush the outside of the stuffed bagel halves with butter or olive oil. Toast them in a skillet, oven, or toaster oven until the exterior turns golden and crispy and the filling is warmed through.

Notes

  • Use room temperature cream cheese for a smooth and easy mixing process as well as a creamy texture.
  • Do not overstuff the bagels to allow closing without filling spilling out during toasting.
  • Consider toasting the bagel halves lightly before stuffing and again after stuffing to maximize crispiness and warmth.
  • Fresh garlic provides a brighter, more intense flavor compared to garlic powder.
  • Customize the herbs used to find your preferred balance of savory and fresh notes.
