Chicken Parmesan Calzone

Chicken Parmesan Calzone

Chicken Parmesan Calzone is a delicious handheld twist on the classic Italian chicken parmesan. It combines crispy golden-brown dough with melty mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, tender cooked chicken breast, and flavorful marinara sauce. Perfect for lunch, dinner, or a snack, this calzone is family-friendly, easily customizable, and great for meal prep with a crispy crust and gooey cheesy filling.

Ingredients

For the Dough and Crust

  • Pizza Dough – enough for one 10-12 inch calzone
  • Olive Oil – for brushing the crust

For the Filling

  • Cooked Chicken Breast – shredded or chopped, about 1-1½ cups
  • Marinara Sauce – ½ to ¾ cup
  • Mozzarella Cheese – 1 cup shredded
  • Parmesan Cheese – ½ cup grated
  • Italian Seasoning – 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic Powder – ¼ teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: Shred or chop the cooked chicken breast into bite-sized pieces. In a bowl, mix the chicken with marinara sauce, shredded mozzarella, grated parmesan, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder until evenly combined.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the pizza dough into a circle about 10-12 inches in diameter, ensuring even thickness to prevent tearing when folded.
  3. Assemble the Calzone: Spoon half the filling mixture onto one side of the dough circle, leaving a border around the edge. Fold the dough over the filling, then press and crimp the edges firmly to seal the calzone securely.
  4. Brush and Bake: Brush the entire calzone with olive oil for a golden crust. Optionally sprinkle extra parmesan cheese and garlic powder on top. Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is crisp and golden brown.
  5. Cool and Serve: Allow the calzone to cool for a few minutes to let the filling set slightly. Slice and serve warm, optionally with extra marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients to ensure even cheese melting and smooth filling blend.
  • Do not overfill the calzone as it may tear or cause filling to spill during baking.
  • Seal the edges tightly to prevent leaks and maintain shape.
  • Brushing with olive oil or egg wash promotes a golden, crispy crust.
  • If the marinara sauce is watery, simmer it beforehand to thicken and avoid soggy dough.
