Ingredients

Scale

Brownie Batter

  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter
  • 4 oz (115g) semi-sweet chocolate
  • 1 cup (200g) sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup (95g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (25g) cocoa powder

Cheesecake Layer

  • 8 oz (225g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/3 cup (65g) sugar (for cheesecake layer)
  • 1/4 cup (60g) sour cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup (about 150g) fresh or thawed blackberries

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Brownie Batter: Melt the unsalted butter and semi-sweet chocolate together in a heatproof bowl over simmering water or gently in the microwave until smooth and glossy. Stir in the sugar, then add the eggs and vanilla extract, mixing well until fully combined. Fold in the all-purpose flour and cocoa powder carefully, mixing just until the batter is uniform and fudgy without overmixing.
  2. Make the Cheesecake Layer: In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Add the sugar, sour cream, and egg, whisking until the mixture is smooth and well-incorporated. Gently fold in the fresh or thawed blackberries, taking care not to crush them completely to maintain juicy bursts.
  3. Assemble the Layers: Grease a baking pan and pour half of the brownie batter evenly across the bottom. Dollop the cheesecake mixture on top of the brownie base in spoonfuls, then add the remaining brownie batter over the cheesecake layer. Using a knife or skewer, gently swirl the two batters together to create marbled purple-black patterns.
  4. Bake Until Set: Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Bake the assembled brownies for 40-45 minutes or until the cheesecake layer is set and does not jiggle when the pan is gently shaken, and the edges of the brownies begin to pull away slightly from the sides of the pan. Avoid overbaking to maintain the fudgy texture.
  5. Cool and Serve: Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before slicing. This allows the layers to firm up for clean, easy cuts. Serve plain or garnish with powdered sugar, fresh blackberries, or a drizzle of melted white chocolate if desired.

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients to ensure the batter blends smoothly.
  • Do not overmix the cheesecake batter to prevent cracking during baking.
  • Fresh blackberries maintain texture better, but frozen berries are acceptable if thawed and drained well.
  • Swirl the batters gently to create beautiful marbled effects without overblending.
  • Allow brownies to cool completely for easier slicing and better texture.
