Bacon Cheese Puffs

Bacon Cheese Puffs

Bacon Cheese Puffs are a deliciously crispy and flaky snack featuring smoky bacon and melted sharp cheddar cheese wrapped in golden puff pastry. Perfect for parties, game days, or a savory family treat, these easy-to-make puffs deliver a perfect balance of flavor and texture that will quickly become a favorite.

Ingredients

Pastry and Filling

  • Puff pastry sheets (refrigerated)
  • Bacon strips (cooked until crisp)
  • Sharp cheddar cheese (grated)

Seasoning and Finish

  • Egg wash (1 beaten egg)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • Optional herbs: finely chopped chives or parsley (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bacon and cheese: Cook the bacon strips until crispy but not burnt, then allow them to cool and crumble into bite-sized pieces. Grate the sharp cheddar cheese so it is ready for filling the puffs.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry: Gently unfold or roll the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface, ensuring even thickness for consistent baking and puffing.
  3. Cut and fill the pastry squares: Cut the pastry into evenly sized squares. Place a small amount of grated cheese and crumbled bacon in the center of each square, avoiding overfilling to prevent leaks.
  4. Seal and shape the puffs: Fold the pastry over the filling to form triangles or rectangles and press the edges firmly with a fork to create a tight seal that keeps the filling inside during baking.
  5. Apply egg wash and season: Brush the tops of each puff with beaten egg to achieve a golden finish. Sprinkle freshly ground black pepper and optional herbs on top for extra flavor and visual appeal.
  6. Bake until golden and puffed: Place the prepared puffs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown.

Notes

  • Use cold puff pastry to ensure maximum fluffiness and crisp layers.
  • Don’t overfill the puffs to prevent filling leakage and burning.
  • Bake on parchment paper to avoid sticking and make cleanup easier.
  • Allow the puffs to cool slightly after baking to set the filling and avoid burns.
  • Typically, no additional salt is needed due to bacon and cheese, but add pepper or herbs to enhance flavors.
