Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh tart apples (such as Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free version)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 large egg (or flax egg for vegan version)
  • 3/4 cup milk (or plant-based milk for vegan version)
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter (or vegan butter for vegan version)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying (neutral oil with high smoke point like canola or vegetable oil)

Optional Toppings

  • Powdered sugar for sprinkling
  • Cinnamon glaze
  • Chopped nuts
  • Shredded coconut
  • Dipping sauces such as caramel or maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and dice the apples into small bite-sized pieces. Toss them with cinnamon and a little sugar to enhance natural sweetness and flavor.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and granulated sugar until evenly combined, forming the dry base of the batter.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated.
  4. Fold the Batter: Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined and still slightly lumpy. Fold in the prepared apples to evenly distribute them throughout the batter.
  5. Heat the Oil and Fry: Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer over medium heat to 350-375°F. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, frying 3-4 at a time to avoid overcrowding. Cook each side for 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
  6. Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to transfer fritter bites to a paper towel-lined plate for draining excess oil. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or drizzle with your choice of glaze and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use fresh, firm apples to maintain texture and juiciness inside each bite.
  • Do not overmix the batter to avoid tough fritters; stir until ingredients just combine.
  • Maintain oil temperature between 350-375°F for crisp, non-greasy fritters.
  • Fry in small batches to keep oil temperature stable and ensure even cooking.
  • Drain fritters well on paper towels to remove excess oil and keep them light and crispy.
